Our Higher National Diploma (HND) is a two-year, full-time Level 5 BTEC Award. An
HND qualification is equivalent to the first two years of a BA(Hons) Degree. The HND provides opportunity to progress to a university of your choice for an additional one-year Top Up, to achieve a full BA (Hons) Degree.

At IMW you will train in Solid State Logic (SSL), Pro Tools, Logic Pro and Ableton with all the very best plug-ins. All your lectures and sessions will take place at IMW Campus state-of-the-art in studios, designed and built by world famous Acoustic Designers, Munroe Acoustics. Our specialist environment ensures for the highest standard in Audio Performance, Production, Sound Design, Engineering and Mixing, including in Dolby Atmos Immersive/Spatial Audio formats.
Founded in 1982 by local musicians and the local Rock Against Racism activists, our aim was to create a professional space for musicians in the community to engage with the exciting new world of music production technology. In our fortieth year, IMW Campus now has a full-on professional recording studio and live room plus a Music Tech lab showcasing a range of cutting edge technology and software.
Our fantastic profession teaching staff all have extensive experience in the music industry having worked at top international studios with world renowned producers and engineers.
Our student family are into every kind of music. Some are exploring the technology for the first time. Others are already into it but need to enhance their skills. Like IMW graduate, Paul Epworth who went on to Produce Rihanna, Florence and the Machine, Maximo Park and with Adele wrote and produced the 2nd biggest selling album of all time and won an Oscars, 5 Grammies and Producer of the Year awards.
We have over 40 years’ experience teaching sound creators and music makers the skills in production, audio engineering and sound design to get qualified and enter the professional Music, Sound and Creative Industries.
You will have an SSL Nucleus console on your own individual workstation controlling Logic Pro, Native Instruments and Ableton. You will work your way up through SSL Matrix and SSL AWS consoles and progress on to the flagship SSL Duality SE48 channel console with your chosen DAW software.
We agree with the current professional industry consensus about the core skills an specialist training needed to flourish and succeed in the industry. That is to combine Digital Audio Workstation (DAW) control with high-end analogue (SSL) recording and mixing.
Prior Experience and portfolio interview
A LEVEL: Including passes at A2 in at least 2 subjects. Must include a music-related subject.
BTEC: Extended Diploma or Diploma. Music Related.
INTERNATIONAL BACCALAUREATE: Diploma with 25 points including a minimum of 15 points at Higher Level.

Year 1 HNC at IMW Campus
Your first period of study will develop your core technical skills in the use of key SSL technology: Nucleus, Matrix controllers and group work on the Duality controlling Pro Tools, Logic, Ableton, Native Instruments. You will explore techniques in sound engineering and music production in a variety of contexts including music production, recording live musicians, video games sound production for film and tv.
Year 2 HND at IMW Campus
In this period of study you will extend your level of technical skills in sound engineering and music production, focusing in detail on the operation of the SLL Duality console throughout the studio production process: Recording, Mixing and Mastering
Year 3 Optional progression to BA(Hons) Top Up Degree
The HND provides the opportunity to progress to a university of your choice for an additional one-year Top Up Degree, to achieve a full BA(Hons) Degree.
IMW will guide you through this progression option. We have strong relationships with several London Universities offering Music Production and Music Technology Degrees.
Year 1 at IMW Campus
You will enhance and expand your critical listening, research and analysis of music and production. Depending on your chosen career path core topics including Music Production in Context, Sound and Music Technology Systems (SSL Nucleus and Matrix), Sound Design for Games and/or Film and TV Project, Music Recording Project, Production portfolio and Show Reel.
Year 2 at IMW Campus
You will develop your technical abilities alongside independent project management and project analysis and evaluation. You will develop your chosen specialist career pathway to follow in your major practical project and research project: Music Producer / Sound and Music for Games/Sound Designer for Film and TV.
Year 3 (Optional Degree progression pathway)
Options are available to take up a One Year Top-Up Degree year, to achieve a BA Hons Degree.
This initial qualification at IMW is a two year Higher National Diploma in Music Production and provides the opportunity to progress to an affiliated University for an optional additional Degree year.
Projects
Professional practice, innovation, enterprise and engagement will be modelled and applied in live projects and assessed through the development of an online creative portfolio. Each piece of coursework will be presented as a digital portfolio. Assessment of portfolios is usually split as follows: 80% Practice Portfolio and 20% Coursework Portfolios
Practice Portfolio
Practice Portfolios include a range of creative artefacts associated with disciplinary and interdisciplinary practice, developed through production, composition, design, writing, and other creative activities. Practice portfolios are used to capture multi-dimensional evidence relating to the product of a creative process.
Coursework Portfolios
Coursework Portfolios report the process of creating practical work. They will often include production reports to illustrate and evaluate the process, as well as integrating research and contextualisation.
1. An offer of a place on the course is subject to full registration with our partner College, including confirmation of fees loan from SLC, at the start of the course.
